Reference & Instruction Services Section
Annual Meeting
4/3/05, Hilton America Hotel, Houston, Texas

I. Introduction
Moderator Ellen Corrigan introduced the section to Anne Haas, current 
Vice Moderator, and Moderator for next year.

II. Minutes from the last annual meeting were accepted and approved.

III. Review of the annual report and ongoing projects
Clarification of RISS purpose and role in instruction was added to the 
mission statement as follows, To study and analyze current issues, 
trends, and developments relating to the provision of reference and 
information (including instructional) services to art library users. 
This Change was unanimously endorsed by the executive board, and will be 
added to the Policy Manual for 2006.

Jonathan Evans, from the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, reported on the 
Artists File Working Group. The group is working toward a web-based 
directory pointing to institutional holdings of artists files. The 
group has considered several issues, including the scope of the project, 
a survey instrument, models for organizing and disseminating the data, 
and collaborating with the Publications Committee to produce content for 
the ARLIS/NA web site. There is also interest in this project from the 
Architecture section. The working group is interested in knowing how 
libraries are making their artists files available, and if they are 
cataloging or digitizing these files on the web.

Martha Walker from Cornell University reported on the status of the 
project to create a free internet resources guide. Martha would like to 
recruit volunteers to investigate the need for and possible development 
of a guide to free Internet resources on the visual arts. Future 
directions for this project, if interest remains among section members, 
include the creation of a task force to move forward on the guide as 
well as coordination with the Publications Committee.

Nedda Ahmed mentioned that the ARLIS web site has been redesigned, and 
perhaps a free internet resources guide could be part of the 
publications section of the web site. Laura Graveline suggested that 
perhaps a Best of the Web list would be easier to maintain, possibly 
incorporated into the Reviews section of Art Documentation.

Martha proposed that a formal working group be charged. Anne Haas asked 
if this kind of guide wasnt already available on the web. Martha noted 
that if some kind of guide was to be maintained, it would require an 
editor. Ross Day suggested that first we need to define what we want to 
create, a full guide to free resources, a best of list of new free 
sites. Hannah Bennett from Yale volunteered to continue work on this 
project. Any other interested people should contact her to help.


IV. Election of the Update Column Editor
Ross Day from the Metropolitan Museum will be taking over this position, 
from Laura Graveline. The position will be redefined this year as news 
editor for the web site.

V. Printed Library Catalog Sets
Peter Blank (not in attendance) is interested in researching the current 
use and historical value of old library catalog sets. Anyone who is 
interested in helping with this project should contact him directly.

VI. Library Blogs
Bill Keller (not in attendance) sent in a suggestion/question about the 
use of blogs in library reference. Apparently the University of Michigan 
is doing this, and the University of Wisconsin is starting a reference blog.

VII. They Never Covered This in Library School workshops.
Organized under the leadership of Barbara Prior, these have evolved out 
of RISS. Suggestions for the workshop in Banff next year include the 
possibility of a workshop on Islamic art, Basic art reference sources, 
or possibly indigenous artists. It is also possible that this workshop 
may not be offered every year, depending on interest and the 
availability of speakers. Barbara asked for volunteers to assist her 
with planning future workshops, and Laurel Bliss, Terry Wilson, Nedda 
Ahmed, and Ross Day will continue on from this years volunteers; Linda 
Zieper, John Hagood, Jonathan Evans, & Laurel Bliss.
