"Spotlight on Archives: Showcasing the Diversity of the Archival
Enterprise" is the unifying theme of 2003 Society of American Archivists
(SAA) annual meeting, scheduled to take place August 18th - 24th at the
Century Plaza Hotel and Tower in Los Angeles, CA.
Paul Duguid, author of The Social Life of Information, will present the
opening plenary address. David Rumsey, a private map collector and
entrepreneur in providing digital versions of maps, will be the second
plenary speaker.
The program features more than 70 workshops, sessions, and other

presentations about archival fundamentals that made their first
appearance at last year's conference in Birmingham - will focus on
moving image archives, security, oral history, records management,
outreach, privacy and confidentiality, and fundraising/ grant writing.
Some themes of the upcoming program include:
*Preservation of film, audio, and digital materials
*Standards for interoperability of electronic information, such as TEI,
CUSTARD, InterPARES, and OAIS
*Aspects of the workplace, including diversity, mentoring, volunteers,
and employment ethics
*Southern California culture as reflected in collections of surfing,
cars, women architects, Afro-American musicians, and regional theater.
