"Spotlight on Archives: Showcasing the Diversity of the Archival Enterprise" is the unifying theme of 2003 Society of American Archivists (SAA) annual meeting, scheduled to take place August 18th - 24th at the Century Plaza Hotel and Tower in Los Angeles, CA. Paul Duguid, author of The Social Life of Information, will present the opening plenary address. David Rumsey, a private map collector and entrepreneur in providing digital versions of maps, will be the second plenary speaker. The program features more than 70 workshops, sessions, and other presentations. A series of "unplugged" sessions - introductory presentations about archival fundamentals that made their first appearance at last year's conference in Birmingham - will focus on moving image archives, security, oral history, records management, outreach, privacy and confidentiality, and fundraising/ grant writing. Some themes of the upcoming program include: *Preservation of film, audio, and digital materials *Standards for interoperability of electronic information, such as TEI, CUSTARD, InterPARES, and OAIS *Aspects of the workplace, including diversity, mentoring, volunteers, and employment ethics *Southern California culture as reflected in collections of surfing, cars, women architects, Afro-American musicians, and regional theater.
