John Miller Burnam Classical Library
(Tenure-track, 12-month faculty appointment)
The University of Cincinnati invites applications and nominations for the
position of Head, John Miller Burnam Classical Library. Internationally
recognized as one of the world's premier research collections, the Library
has one of the largest collections of Classical Studies in the world, with
over 170,000 volumes.
We seek candidates with successful administrative experience, a thorough
understanding of collection development as it relates to all aspects of
Roman and Greek civilization, including history, archaeology, language and
literature, numismatics, science and technology and early Christian studies
as well as Modern Greek, a strong commitment to service and a collegial
leadership style.
The Librarian is responsible for a full range of information and research
support as well as administration, management and supervision of personnel.
This faculty position reports to and receives direction from the Head of the
Information Services Division and is responsible for 1.5 staff members and
student assistants. Receives guidance from and consults with the Assistant
Dean for Collections in collection matters. Works closely with the Classics
Department, especially its library committee, to ensure needs are being met.
Environment: The Department of Classics is an internationally recognized
leader in the field of Classical studies, including the study of the
Classical languages, ancient history, and archaeology. It is particularly
renowned for its past archaeological excavations at Troy and Pylos under the
direction of Carl Blegen. This tradition of excellence in archaeology
continues today with current field projects at Troy in Turkey, Midea and
Pylos in Greece, at Bamboula in Cyprus, and at Apollonia in Albania.
The Department consists of 12 full-time faculty members, as well as many
post doctoral research fellows and approximately 45 graduate students. The

Key Responsibilities:
ˇ Responsible for the provision of a full range of information and
research support in a highly automated environment. Directs and provides
reference and information services
ˇ Responsible for the development, preservation, and maintenance of
the Classics Library collections
ˇ Responsible for the management and administration of the Classics
Library
ˇ Maintains an atmosphere conducive to learning, productivity, and
job satisfaction for all staff
ˇ Promotes the digital delivery of services
ˇ Maintains an understanding of the research and teaching programs
in assigned areas and provides appropriate library instruction
ˇ Collaborates with library administration and others in seeking
grants and other outside funding and in community outreach
ˇ Participates in library committees, meetings and workshops as
appropriate
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
ˇ ALA-accredited MLS degree or foreign equivalent
ˇ Undergraduate degree in Classics or related discipline
ˇ Demonstrated understanding of information needs of Classics
scholars and the application of information technologies to serving these
populations
ˇ Reading knowledge of Latin and either Modern or Ancient Greek and
one modern European language (French, German, or Italian) in addition to
English
ˇ At least three years of professional library experience
ˇ Successful supervisory experience with commitment to mentoring,
training, and development of staff
ˇ Strong commitment to innovative and responsive public service.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and to contribute positively to a
collegial team environment
ˇ Ability to develop and deliver subject-related instructional
sessions
ˇ Superior interpersonal and communication skills
ˇ Ability and interest in fulfilling the university's requirements
for tenure and promotion. Commitment to professional growth and
development.
Desired Qualifications:
ˇ Graduate degree in Classics or related discipline
ˇ Academic research library experience
ˇ Collection development experience with strong bibliographic
verification skills
ˇ Experience with web development
ˇ Demonstrated experience with the application of information
technologies
ˇ Additional modern European language skills (French, German, or
Italian)
Salary and Benefits: Minimum salary is $41,310. Rank and salary negotiable
depending on experience and qualifications. Benefits include health care,
retirement plan, 22 days of vacation, sick leave, and tuition remission for
self and immediate family.
