7. Managing SLA's Communications
As a member of Special Libraries Association, it is important that you
know how the Association manages communications. As you have seen, there
has been a dramatic shift in communications from association headquarters,
your chapter and your division to electronic media. This is based on a
number of factors, the most important of which is seventy percent (70%) of
the respondents to the 2001 Membership Survey indicated that e-mail is the
preferred choice to receive communications from the Association and the
second choice of twenty-seven percent (27%). That is a clear mandate.
Other factors include expeditious delivery to an international membership as
well as a reduction in postage and other printing costs thereby allowing
your dues dollar to stretch farther.
You will continue to receive Information Outlook® via postal service
and via Virtual SLA access. You will receive other universal association
communications via e-mail predominantly. We are attempting to consolidate
key member-wide communications into two universal e-publications:
SLA.COMmunicate and BOARD.COMmunicate. Since we believe this information is
critical, there is not an opt-out for e-mail communications from the
Association and its units. You may manage the communiqués by either
receiving, directing to a "rule" to a specific folder to read at your
leisure or auto-delete, or simply hit the delete button if the topic does
not interest you. And, if you definitely do not want to receive any e-mail
communications from SLA international headquarters, your chapter, division,
caucus, or other SLA members you may remove your e-mail address from the
membership database. We hope you will not choose this last option since you
will miss many communications about your professional association and the
opportunity to network with other professionals.
As part of our membership information policy, SLA does not lease your
e-mail address, only your mailing address. You will continue to have the
opportunity to opt out of the mailing list service. Please report any
abuses of unsolicited email to Linda N. Broussard by e-mail: [log in to unmask]
or telephone: 1-202-939-3682.
