And a bit more on the instructional thread...
With the launching of our web-based OPAC (Innovative Interfaces)
http://ryerson.artic.edu/ in Feb. 2001, and the networking of our
subscription online resources to the AIC campus
http://ryerson.artic.edu/screens/gateway.html in Aug. 2001 we
initiated a a BI program using a computer lab which provides six work
stations and an instructor's station with projection capabilities. To
date we are offering three classes: 1) an introduction to the OPAC;
2) an introduction to the networked online resources; and, 3) an
advanced class on searching the networked online resources
(introductory class required as a pre-requisite). These classes are
open to all Museum staff. Participant include everyone from senior
curators to Museum staff in non-research positions but who are
working on advanced degrees in art history and wish to increase their
research abilities. These classes are 90 minutes long and build on a
basic knowledge of information resource structure which is stressed
in these sessions.
We are about to begin a program for our docents, a one hour BI
session limited to the OPAC and Art Abstracts, followed (immediately)
by a return to the Libraries and another one hour using the public
terminals and retrieving material from the stacks. A much more
streamlined and simplified approach designed to show them how these
resources work and get materials in their hands before they leave at
the end of the two hours.
We are considering other classes and have been very pleased by the
participation of the Museum staff. We have noted a corresponding
increase in ILL traffic.
To date we have given 18 OPAC sessions to 64 participants, 10
introductory classes on networked resources to 47 participants, and 3
advanced classes on networked resources to 15 participants.
Additional specifics can be obtained by giving me a mail. I will not
be at the St. Louis conference, but if you have any questions please
speak with Lauren Lessing, our Senior Reference Librarian who will be
attending.
Regards to all! Have a great conference in St. Louis.
