present
THE 1998
FLORIDA ARTISTS' BOOK PRIZE
AWARD CEREMONY AND EXHIBITION
OF SELECTED ENTRIES
MARCH 4-26, 1999
Linda K. Johnson, a graphic design professor at
Florida Atlantic University, is the winner of the
1998 Florida Artists' Book Prize.
The $2,000 prize will be presented to her at the
award ceremony to be held in the Bienes Center
on March 4, from 6-8 pm.
Johnson's award-winning book, TWENTY-SIX LETTERS,
is a collection of letters written by Lewis Carroll,
author of Alice in Wonderland. The 26 pages of the
book are envelopes, one for each letter of the
alphabet, containing a Lewis Carroll letter to a
friend. The alphabet is represented by character
illustrations based on those found in Carroll's
stories and verses. Many of the letters were written
by Carroll to his young friends, and contain stories,
riddles, acrostic verses, rebus pictures, and
instructions for his word games. The book is made
from Mashi paper envelopes, Fabiano Ingres Crema paper
for letters, piano hinge binding, and is housed in
a box covered in Momi hand-made paper. Edition of 10.
The reception and award ceremony will also celebrate
the opening of an exhibition of selected entries
for the prize, which will be on display March 4 through
26 in the Bienes Center.
The annual Florida Artists' Book Prize was established
in 1997 by the Bienes Center for the Literary Arts
and the Florida Center for the Book.
