Dear ARLIS Members,

Oak Knoll Press has published two new books. They are listed below.

"A tour-de-force of biblical scholarship"

"THE BIBLE AS BOOK: THE FIRST PRINTED EDITIONS"
Edited by Kimberly Van Kampen and Paul Saenger
  Introduction by Sir Anthony Kenny

This second volume investigates the history of the Bible between 1455 and
1520. In this series of scholarly essays the early printing on the text,
format and uses of the Bible are explored. It is based on the conferences
sponsored by The Scriptorium: Center for Christian Antiquities in
co-operation with the Van Kampen Foundation. In the past, an inaccurate
assumption held that the first printed Bibles were generally uniform in the
text and presentation. The Bible As Book: The First Printed Editions
investigates the unique features of various editions of fifteenth-century
printed Bibles as well as the social, political and technological
circumstances under which these publications were produced.

This volume represents a gathering of research relating to the study of
incunabula and early sixteenth-century imprints. In addition to the Vulgate,
the first editions of the Greek and Hebrew Bible are addressed as well. Also
discussed are the great polygots, vernacular versions, and the absence of
Bibles from the output of English presses. Co-published by Oak Knoll Press
and The British Library.

"JOURNEYS THROUGHT THE MARKET: TRAVEL, TRAVELLERS
  AND THE BOOK TRADE"
Edited by Robin Myers & Michael Harris

Journeys Through the Market is a series of historical essays on the
awakening interests in travel, exploration and its literature. The first
"travel books" were written by the intrepid explorers explaining the New
World to an eager European audience. In time as more people were able to
visit these exotic places, a whole range of travel literature was created.
In this important work leading authorities such as Bill Bell, Senior
Lecturer in Literature, University of Edinburgh; Jeremy Black, Professor of
History, University of Exeter; Giles Barber, past President of the
Bibliographical Society; Michael Harris, Senior Lecturer in History,
Birkbeck College; Charles Newton, Victoria and Albery Museum; Andrew Tatham,
Keeper at the Royal Geographical Society; Anthony Payne, Director of Bernard
Quaritch, Ltd. have contributed seven well-written, scholarly essays on the
dramatic influence of travel and exploration on the publishing business.
Co-published with St. Paul's Bibliographies.
