Max Marmor, head Arts Library Yale *** Visual Media Cataloger 1: Visual Resources Collection, Arts Library, Yale University Salary Grade: 23 Duration: Fixed duration, 2 years from date of hire (possibility of extension) Schedule/shift: Weekdays M-F; 8:30-5:00 (flexible hours) The University and the Library The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching and research at the University, has more than 10.5 million volumes housed in the Sterling Memorial Library and 16 school and departmental libraries. It employs a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly 600 FTE who have the highest caliber of faculty and students, participate on committees and are involved in other areas of staff development. A full spectrum of library resources, from rare books and manuscripts to rapidly expanding network of electronic resources, constitutes one of Yale's distinctive strengths. The Library is engaged in numerous ambitious projects such as the renovation of the main library building, the complete retrospective conversion of the Library's catalog, and various automation projects, which include network access to scholarly information and preservation imaging. General purpose Under the general supervision of the Arts Librarian, the Visual Materials Cataloger creates, enhances, and maintains cataloging records at a Windows-based cataloger's workstation for a wide range of multimedia objects, including especially digital and analog images in the fields of the visual and dramatic arts, architecture and urban planning, and material culture, for the Arts Library's digital image library development projects, especially the Imaging America project. Works in close collaboration with the Visual Resources Curator (Arts Library) and the Chief Catalog Librarian and Head Catalog Department (Sterling Memorial Library). Provides descriptive cataloging in a Visual Resources cataloging database (presently in FilemakerPro) according to national and local standards and the requirements of Yale's local online system. Keeps abreast of developments in cataloging trends in the Visual Resources field and applies new standards, interpretations, and techniques as appropriate. Assigns subject headings and other access points based on Library of Congress, Art and Architecture Thesaurus, Union List of Artist Names and other standards, and local practice. Creates authority records for local use. May assist the VR Curator in implementing changes to the library's image cataloging protocols. May train and revise the work of students, cataloging assistants, and other librarians. Contributes to implementing the mission of the Library and is expected to be active professionally. Performs similar duties as assigned or required. Qualifications MLS from an ALA-accredited library science program or a graduate degree in the history of art or a related discipline. One year relevant professional experience in the Visual Resources field. Familiarity with the VRA Core image cataloging standard, VR professional practices for the description, cataloging and classification of images of cultural heritage materials, AAT, ULAN, TGN. Preferred: familiarity with AACR2, Library of Congress rule interpretations and subject heading practice, and MARC format. Strong reading knowledge of two or more European languages. Strong communication and analytical skills. Ability to work independently and with others. Ability to excel in a rapidly-changing automated team environment. Strong computer skills, including experience with personal computer hardware and software, bibliographic services such as RLIN and OCLC, and network-based tools desirable.
