=3E
=3E=22El Favor de los Santos: The Retablo Collection of New Mexico State
=3EUniversity=22 Exhibition and Symposium
=3E
=3E We anticipate that through our scholarly research, exhibition, and
=3Ecommunity activities, the history of the 19th-century Mexican retablo
=3Ewill be redefined within a broader cultural context, emphasizing the
=3Econtinuity of Mexican religious traditions that have sought the favor of
=3Ethe gods since pre-Columbian times. =22El Favor de los Santos: The =
Retablo
=3ECollection of New Mexico State University=22 is the most comprehensive
=3Eexhibition to date exploring the subject of the 19th-century Mexican
=3Eretablo (devotional religious paintings on tin.)
=3E The exhibition was made possible through generous grants and
=3Econtributions from the Stockman Family Foundation, the Rockefeller
=3EFoundation, the New Mexico Office of Cultural Affairs, the U.S./Mexico
=3EFund for Culture, Fundacion Cultural Bancomer, Fondo Nacional para la
=3ECultura y las Artes, the New Mexico Arts Division, the Friends of the
=3EUniversity Art Gallery, and the New Mexico College of Arts and Sciences
=3EResearch Center.
=3E After premiering at the University Art Gallery at New Mexico State
=3EUniversity, Las Cruces, in November 1999, the exhibition will =
subsequently
=3Etravel to the Museo de Historia Mexicana, Monterrey, Mexico=3B the Museo
=3EAmparo, Puebla, Mexico=3B the Museo Franz Mayer, Mexico City, Mexico=3B =
the San
=3EJose Museum of Art, San Jose, California=3B the Mexican Fine Arts Center
=3EMuseum, Chicago, Illinois=3B and the University of Miami Lowe Art Museum,
=3EMiami, Florida. The exhibition contains 170 retablos and 10 viceregal
=3Epaintings from the NMSU collection which are complemented by 75 loan
=3Eobjects including statuary, paintings, and prints from the Museo Nacional
=3EAntropologia, Mexico City=3B the Museo Franz Mayer, Mexico City=3B the =
Museo
=3Ede la Basilica de Guadalupe, Mexico City=3B the El Paso Museum of Art, El
=3EPaso, Texas=3B the University of New Mexico Art Museum, Albuquerque, New
=3EMexico=3B and the Museum of International Folk Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico.
=3ETwelve photomurals and four installations will help contextualize the
=3Eretablo tradition.
=3E The Symposium will bring together the most prominent scholars in the
=3Efield of devotional painting traditions in Mexico and Latin America. A
=3Eprevious grant from the U.S./Mexico Fund for Culture funded these =
scholars
=3Eto spend up to a week researching the NMSU retablo collection. Symposium
=3Eparticipants are invited to attend the three-day celebration for the =
Virgin
=3Eof Guadalupe from December 10-12 organized by the local Tortugas Mestizo
=3Etribe, the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Catholic Diocese, and the
=3Elarger community of Las Cruces. This important local celebration =
includes
=3Ematachine dancers, a procession of images of the Virgin of Guadalupe to =
the
=3Enearby Tortugas mountain, and numerous practices related to the present
=3Econtinuation of the retablo tradition.
