Sammy Hoi **************************** CORCORAN COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN ASSOCIATE DEAN OF BFA PROGRAM Effective 2000) The Corcoran College of Art and Design, founded in 1890, is the only accredited 4-year professional college of art and design in the Washington, DC, and a rare museum-college partnership in the country. With a current full-time enrollment of 300, it offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) Degree in three major areas -- Fine Arts, Graphic Design and Photography. Its student body is recruited on a regional, national and international basis. The college has a large Continuing Education Program, with an annual enrollment of over 3,000. It also has a Visual Arts Community Outreach Program that serves city youth of K-12 age, and an active exhibition program in its own exhibition center in the museum space. General Responsibilities The Associate Dean of BFA Program oversees and supports the four-year degree program of the college. BFA departments currently include Academic Studies, Fine Arts, Foundation, Graphic Design, and Photography. The Associate Dean of BFA Program reports to the Dean, and works closely with the Associate Dean of Continuing Education, Associate Dean of Students, Registrar, Department Chairs, and the BFA faculty. Specific Duties Assessment and advocacy of BFA program needs; quality control of BFA program, including assessment of courses and curricula; development of and support to the BFA faculty, including a leadership role in the hiring, assignment, evaluation, and training of faculty; supervision of the Library; BFA student advisement; oversight of BFA room and personnel scheduling; liaison work between BFA and CE programs; development of new programs, including research and curricular development; accreditation related work; coordination of mobility programs; among others. Educational and Professional Requirements The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong commitment to the goals of higher education and an understanding, gained through experience, of the challenges, concerns, and emerging issues of undergraduate education in art and design. A minimum of three years of higher education administrative experience in a leadership position (assistant or associate dean/director) is mandatory. Teaching experience in art and/or design is required. Curriculum development and outcome assessment skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies, computer system skills, and demonstrated ability in budget management are required. Candidates for this position must hold an appropriate degree in an area that is consistent with the professional and artistic direction of the college. Salary and benefits are competitive. The Library consists of 18,000 monographs, a study collection of Artist*s Books and 135 periodical subscriptions. The collection is supplemented by the extensive resources in the Washington, DC area. Staffing includes a Library Technician and student workers. Required Qualifications ALA accredited MLS. Undergraduate degree in Art History, Studio Art, or related humanities area. 3-5 years of professional experience in an academic art library, including significant management experience, technical services background, and collection development. Knowledge of electronic information tools and computerized library systems. Strong public service orientation and interpersonal skills. Preferred Qualifications Demonstrated experience in grant writing. Previous experience designing an art library facility. Knowledge of and expertise in library automation systems.
