I find the Inventory of American Paintings Executed Before 1914 (and also
the one devoted to sculpture) to be very helpful.  There are no images, but
knowing  ownership can help locate an image.  The database is part of the
Smithsonian Institution Research Information system, and can be accessed at
http://www.siris.si.edu.
