> The University of Pennsylvania Library is seeking a talented Assistant
> Fine Arts Librarian/Image Collection Curator to manage and develop the
> Fine Arts Image Collection of the Fisher Fine Arts Library.  The Fine
> Arts Library supports the programs of the Art History Department and the
> Graduate School of Fine Arts, and serves as the principal site of fine
> arts collections and services for the University of Pennsylvania
> community. The Library has a collection of 110,000 volumes and 825
> current serials.  Fine Arts image resources include 429,000 slides;
> 84,000 mounted photographs; a growing collection of digital image files
> (currently numbering 20,000); and the images carried within the
> Library's print and electronic collections.

> Duties and Responsibilities:  Act as deputy to the Fine Arts Librarian,
> sharing the management responsibilities of the Fine Arts Library.  Plan
> and develop the Library's Fine Arts Image Collection, in consultation
> with the Fine Arts Librarian and the faculties of the Art History
> Department and the Graduate School of Fine Arts.  Manage the transition
> of the Fine Arts Image Collection from slides and photographs to a
> digital resource, in consultation with the Fine Arts Librarian, the
> University Library's Web Manager, and the Director of the Schoenberg
> Center for Electronic Text & Image.  Manage and develop automated
> cataloging and related procedures to create an image database supporting
> teaching and research, in coordination with the Library's Information
> Processing Division.  Provide regular reference and research
> consultation service to library users.  Supervise the Image Collection's
> staff of 3.5 FTE and student workers.  Manage and develop image
> resources elements of the Fine Arts library website.  Serve as
> bibliographer and subject liaison for specific disciplines, managing a
> portion of the Library's acquisitions budget and working closely with
> particular academic departments to understand their needs.  Provide
> orientation and instruction in the use of print and electronic
> resources.  Participate in library-wide task forces.

> Qualifications: The successful candidate will possess an MLS from an
> ALA-accredited library school or equivalent in theory and practice.
> This position requires an advanced degree in art history or related
> field, or the equivalent combination of relevant education and
> experience.  Familiarity with developments in digitization, emerging
> core standards for image description, and issues related to image
> cataloging is highly desirable.  The successful candidate will also
> have:  a working knowledge of two European languages; supervisory
> experience and experience working with image collections; evidence of
> effective collaboration with faculty and students; strong desktop
> computing skills; some database management experience; demonstrated
> interpersonal skills and a user-centered orientation; the ability to
> work as part of a team and to communicate clearly, orally and in
> writing.

> Rank and Salary:  Appointment as Librarian B requires 1 to 3 years of
> previous professional experience. Appointment as Librarian C requires 3
