The Stanford University Libraries and Academic Information Resources (SUL/AIR) seeks an early-career art librarian with a strong interest in art/architectural history bibliography and excellent interpersonal skills. Responsibilities: Shares responsibility for selection of materials for the Art & Architecture Library collection including both current and antiquarian materials, using LC proofs, dealers' catalogs and quotes, approval plan receipts, reviews, etc. and following Library's collection development policy. Evaluates gifts and participates in other aspects of collection management, such as weeding, collection evaluation, dealer relations, and faculty contact work. Handles in-person and telephone reference requests using manual and online tools during designated "on duty" periods; conducts instructional and orientation sessions as necessary. Carries on outreach activities to patron groups within the Library's primary clientele. Shares teaching responsibility for course in art bibliography with the head librarian. Trains staff as necessary to use art reference sources. Carries out occasional special assignments in support of the Humanities & Area Studies Resource Group (of which the Art & Architecture Library is a part) and serves on SUL/AIR committees and task groups as appropriate. Qualifications: Required--collection management and reference experience; reading knowledge of at least two foreign languages (preferably from among French, German, Italian, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese); ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form; ability to work easily and effectively with faculty, students, and other professionals in a research library setting; ALA/MLS, or the demonstrated equivalent in training and/or experience; BA in art history. Experience with current technology and information systems is required as well as automated catalogs and other databases. Previous supervisory experience is required at the Associate Librarian rank. Highly desirable--graduate work in art history. Background: The Art & Architecture Library, one of nine research branch collections in the SUL/AIR system, and part of the Humanities & Area Studies Resource Group, supports teaching and research in the visual arts at Stanford, with primary responsibility for informational support of the students, faculty, and staff of the Department of Art & Art History and the curatorial staff of the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts (formerly the Stanford Museum). The Art & Architecture Library contains a collection of about 155,000 volumes, does an annual circulation of 40,000 volumes, and has a staff of six FTE, including two professional positions.
