How can we engage and entertain our visitors, while trying to interest and educate them, without doing a disservice to the artifacts in our care? Participants in this panel have played the roles of curators, artists, archaeologists, cultural documentation specialists and policy makers, often wearing multiple hats. Using real examples, they will explore the challenges to the 'authentic' posed by interactive multimedia. These reflections presage a theme that runs throughout ichim99: How do we make sure that the virtual doesn't obscure the real? From Wireless Object and Body Tracking to Wearable computers: technologies and methods for interactive exhibit design Flavia Sparacino, Kent Larson, Ron MacNeil, Glorianna Davenport, Alex Pentland, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA See interactive exhibit projects developed to add technology to the museum space or to the museum visitor. These technological interventions aim to help curators and designers achieve a balance between leisure and learning, and to be more effective in conveying story and meaning. These interactives track people and objects (with wireless and unencumbering real time computer-vision techniques and with wearable computers that can respond to the context and presence of the visitor). These systems enhance the memory of the visit and help build a constructivist-style learning experience. Through an audience response-measuring device (applause-meter) connected to a computer, viewing audiences respond to periodic questions reminiscent of marketing polls. These questions occur every 6 minutes during the story. The loudest applause determines the winning answer. Each program lasts approximately 30 minutes. The result is an aesthetically rich, highly informative, and socially complex experience which engages visitors with each other, with the physical space and themes of the exhibition, and especially with the content of the artists' and curator's work. The MoMA/MIT Media Lab Interactive Table uses an array of sophisticated experimental hardware and software, but places this technology visually and conceptually 'outside the frame'. The goal is to illuminate the exhibition material while preserving, indeed amplifying, contact with the physical and social reality of the gallery setting.
