Each annual conference brings with it unique opportunities to focus
attention on the local region in which the conference takes place. The
Pittsburgh/ Ohio Chapter region is rich in artistic topics.

In keeping with the Conference theme of "Links to the Past, Bridges to the
Future", the Women & the Arts Roundtable will present a session entitled
"Women Leaders in the Art Pottery Industry: Ohio and Beyond" The session
will focus attention on the often overlooked leadership contributions of
women in the Art Pottery field. Historically, the position that women in
the art pottery field occupied were simply china painters, or as the most,
decorators. The design, manufacture, and certainly the organization and
ownership of the potteries was always assumed to be male. This is far from
the case, as the speakers in the session will demonstrate.

It is also important to demonstrate that the beginnings of women's
leadership in the Art Pottery industry began in the Arts & Crafts Movement
of the 1870s but extended well into the 20th century. This roll of
leadership also extended into the western states, as the country expanded
its boundaries.
