The Thomas J. Watson Library, the research library of The Metropolitan
Museum of Art invites applications for the following positions:

Head of Technical Services (search extended)
This position is responsible for planning, organizing and coordinating all
activities of the Technical Services Department including acquisitions and
monograph and serials cataloging.  The Head of Technical Services has direct
responsibility for the daily operations of all technical services functions
including: monitoring work flow; establishing cataloging and retrospective
conversion priorities and assignments; setting policies and procedures;
ensuring ongoing training of nine librarians and ten FTE support staff; and
coordinating projects to integrate the holdings of the Museum's independent
libraries into the online catalog. Watson Library uses the serials,
acquisitions, and cataloging modules provided by Innovative Interfaces, and
has been cataloging in RLIN since 1980.  This position reports to the Chief
Librarian.

Qualifications:  MLS with a minimum of six years of progressively
responsible technical services experience in a research library.
Demonstrated leadership, management, and human resources skills.  Detailed
knowledge of current cataloging practices, including AACR2R, LC Subject
Headings, USMARC formats and authority control.  Experience with RLIN and an
integrated library system is essential. Awareness of current issues and
trends in technical services management and library technology.  Working
knowledge of two foreign languages. Art library experience or a background
in fine arts is preferred.

Cataloger for Romance Languages
This position is responsible for the descriptive cataloging, subject
analysis and classification of monographs, exhibition catalogs and other
formats in French, Italian and other Romance Languages. Participates in the
creation of authority records and assists in database maintenance. Provides
scheduled reference service. Qualifications: MLS and strong general
background in the history of art; cataloging experience in an academic or
research library; fluency in French and Italian and familiarity with other
Romance languages; detailed knowledge of current cataloging practices,
including AACR2R, LC Subject Headings, USMARC formats and authority control;
ability to function as a contributing team member in a production-oriented
environment; awareness of current issues and trends in technical services;
experience with RLIN and an integrated library system is essential;
excellent written and oral communication skills.


The following three positions are non-professional positions and do not
require the MLS.

Coordinator for Interlibrary Loan and Gifts and Exchanges
Manages Interlibrary Loan, coordinating approximately 1,200 requests for
lending and borrowing per year. Responsible for the receipt, acknowledgment
and processing of material received as gifts or through exchanges. Maintains
effective relationships with Watson Library's exchange partners.  Processes
approximately 2,500 titles received through gift or exchange.  This includes
creating MARC-format bibliographic records for current receipts, and
arranging for the proper disposal of duplicate material. Participates in
training library assistants, work-study students and volunteers.
Qualifications: BA degree; experience working in a research library;
experience in library technical services; familiarity with the components of
automated library systems; strong computer skills including facility with
Windows and with Word, Access and Excel; knowledge of at least one European
language and ability to handle requests in a variety of languages; ability
to maintain detailed records and statistics; broad background in art history
and strong interest in scholarship; ability to work flexibly and creatively
in a changing environment; ability to communicate effectively both orally
and in writing.

Book Conservation Associate

This position is responsible for the physical processing, repair and
conservation treatment of the Watson Library collection; performing repairs
and conservation work on material acquired by the library; processing
commercial library binding shipments of monographs and periodicals;
proofreading spines, correcting mistakes, bookplating, tipping in errata
slips, etc. The Book Conservation Associate has administrative
responsibilities involving: basic word processing and database management
skills; supervision of volunteers and interns; maintenance of the book
conservation facility; and assistance with special preservation projects,
including condition surveys, emergency planning and response, and staff
education. Qualifications: knowledge of basic book and paper conservation
treatments including rebinding, rebacking, cleaning and refurbishing of
paper, cloth and leather bindings, paper cleaning and repair, polyester
encapsulation, box making, preservation photocopying, and other related
skills; strong computer skills including facility with Windows and with
Word, Access and Excel; ability to communicate effectively both orally and
in writing; ability to share information and to participate in continuing
education in conservation and the book arts, for the benefit of the book
conservation department. A portfolio will be requested.

 Bibliographic Assistant (part-time 28 hours per week)

This position assists in processing new acquisitions including pre-order
searching, inputting orders and checking in books. Assists in processing for
cataloging including updating bibliographic and order records, creating item
records, and preparing material for binding. Provides general assistance in
the Museum's Central Catalog including filing, answering public inquiries
and assisting researchers.


The Thomas J. Watson Library is the research library of The Metropolitan
Museum of Art. With holdings of 450,000 volumes, 2,500 current periodical
subscriptions and extensive electronic resources, Watson Library is one of
the most comprehensive collections in the world for the history of art.
