NEW FULL-TIME POSITION OPEN                       CATALOGER, DUMBARTON OAKS
LIBRARY


Purpose: Performs original and copy cataloging in several languages for
distinguished library (approximately 170,000 volumes) with world-renowned
collections in Byzantine and medieval studies, garden history and landscape
architecture, and Pre-Columbian studies. Will concentrate initially in the
Byzantine and medieval book collection. Cataloging and associated authority
work to be done on SIRSI to national standards, using AACR2, LC subject
headings and classification, and USMARC formats. Will report to Head
Librarian.

Duties:

1.      Performs original and copy cataloging in all major European
languages for monographs and nonprint materials using  AACR2 (rev.), LCRIs,
LCC, LCSH, USMARC bibliographical formats/authority.
2.      Participates in establishing and maintaining USMARC holdings records
for serials.
3.      Helps develop and maintain quality control procedures for cataloging
and processing of materials.
4.      Participates in strategic planning, the setting of goals and
priorities, and the design and refinement of cataloging work procedures.
5.      May train and oversee library technicians in running reports and
processing materials.
6.      Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications: ALA-accredited library degree (M.L.S.); B.A. in a humanities
field preferred.  Reading knowledge of several European languages, including
French and German. Three years' minimum cataloging experience, preferably in
an academic setting; thorough knowledge of cataloging tools, standards, and
conventions.  Strong computer skills and experience with an automated
library system (SIRSI and/or HOLLIS preferred). Ability to work effectively
in a collaborative team environment.  Excellent interpersonal and
communication skills in order to be able to contribute to an evolving work
situation requiring flexibility and versatility.

Grade 56:  salary range $35,200-57,600. Excellent benefits.  Position
