Visual Arts Library of the School of Visual Arts 209 East 23rd Street New York, NY Job Title: Reference/Periodicals Librarian Reports to: Head of Reference Services Scope/Accountability: Provide reference service through daily public reference hours, library instruction classes, special workshops, and written guides to resources; develop periodicals collection (400+ titles) and supervise its maintenance and preservation; supervise 250,000+ item picture collection; participate in committee work involving library automation and space planning; recommend reference resources for purchase in all formats; work on special projects and assignments as determined by Head of Reference Services and Chief Librarian. DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: Reference * assist patrons with information needs during public reference hours, including one evening a week * teach 8 - 10 individual classes per semester within Library Instruction Program, each including an introduction to basic research techniques and assistance to students on specific library-based assignments * prepare specialized information guides to enhance patrons' understanding of library resources and facilitate their research * conduct general tours and orientation presentations, prepare special classes and workshops during the academic year as directed by the Head of Reference Services Periodicals * supervise the library's 300+ current periodical subscriptions, including finalizing annual renewal list; implement automated check-in using the acquisitions module of Endeavor's Voyager software, and communicate subscription-related information (problems, new orders, cancellations) to EBSCO, our serials vendor. * develop annual budget information relating to the periodicals collection for the Chief Librarian * perform ongoing evaluation of the collection in terms of development, preservation, and display; work with periodicals assistant to complete semi-annual periodicals binding * maintain and update the Periodicals Locator; coordinate with the Head of Technical Services on inventory to obtain necessary periodicals information for the library's online catalog and for union listings Picture Collection * select images to add to 250,000+ item Picture Collection; identify new image sources (via periodical subscriptions, specialized book and periodical purchases, donations); develop annual budget information relating to the Picture Collection for Chief Librarian * maintain Picture Collection circulation and usage statistics; refine classification system by adding new categories and cross references; develop finding aids and guides to assist patrons * supervise student assistants in processing new material, refiling folders, and general collection preservation * plan for the integration of digital images into the collection, including stock photography resources with appropriate licensing and copyright clearance Additional Responsibiliites * participate in library committee work, including automation and space planning * contribute columns and articles to the library newsletter about the picture collection, periodicals, and reference resources * special projects and assisgnments as determined by the Head of Reference Services or Chief Librarian QUALIFICATIONS: * M.L.S. from ALA-accredited institution * 2 years reference experience in an academic, public or special library setting utilizing an online catalog and a variety of electronic information sources * strong background in the history of art and design (minimum of BA in art history or its equivalent) * experience with formalized library instruction or teaching * excellent organizational, administrative, and communication skills (both written and oral) * supervisory experience * strong interpersonal skills; ability to work well in a team context * energetic self-starter able to develop creative solutions for a range of responsibilities * interest in popular culture and current events The Visual Arts Library of the School of Visual Arts serves an educational community of 2,550 undergraduate, 400 graduate, and 4,000 continuing education students, plus an adjunct faculty of nearly 800. The library's collection includes 68,000 books, 300 current periodical subscriptions, 250,000 pictures, 130,000 color transparencies, plus special collections of comics, film scripts, videotapes, audio recordings, CD-ROMs and theses. Collection emphases are on the history of art and design, and the humanities. The Visual Arts Library uses Voyager, Endeavor Information Systems' integrated online library system.
