Arts Library

INSTRUCTIONAL SERVICES LIBRARIAN, Arts Library, Yale University
Minimum Rank: Librarian I-II

THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY:

The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching and
research at the University, has more than 10.5 million volumes housed in the
Sterling Memorial Library and 16 school and department libraries. It employs a
dynamic and innovative staff of nearly 600 FTE who have the opportunity to
work
with the highest caliber of colleagues, faculty and students in a variety of
contexts conducive to staff development. A full spectrum of library resources,
from rare books and manuscripts to a rapidly expanding network of electronic
resources, constitutes one of Yale's distinctive strengths. The Library is
engaged in numerous ambitious projects such as the renovation of the main
library building, the complete retrospective conversion of the Library's
catalog, and various automation projects which include network access to
scholarly information and a range of digital library initiatives.

The Arts Library serves several distinguished programs, including the Schools
of Architecture, Art and Drama; the Department of the History of Art; the Yale
University Art Gallery; the Yale Center for British Art; the Yale community
generally; and the entire New Haven and Southern Connecticut region. A new
Arts
Library facility is presently under design as part of a master plan for the
Yale arts area. It will incorporate the existing Art & Architecture Library,
the Visual Resources Collection, which houses 325,000 study slides, 196,000
study photographs and a growing corpus of digital images, as well as the Arts
of the Book Collection and the Drama Library.

The Arts Library is developing an innovative program of enhanced instructional
and other reader services that will be delivered wherever the needs of readers
warrant: on site at the Arts Library; at Sterling Memorial Library, where a
significant proportion of the Yale Library's research collections in the arts
resides; in classrooms and seminar rooms; in academic departments; remotely
over the expanding campus communications network; and by telephone and
correspondence. These services will include bibliographic instruction and
reference services; instruction in network navigation and in the discovery,
retrieval, and use of art information; and instruction in the use of
specialized tools supporting the Arts Library's program of web-based digital
media services. Ongoing assessment and development of reader services will be
