Title: "The Price is Right? April 30, 1999"

The Southern California Online Users Group (SCOUG) invites all librarians
and information services professionals to a workshop entitled "The Price
is Right? The Economics of Libraries and Information Centers in a Digital
Age." The program will be held on Friday, April 30, at the Sheraton
Industry Hills Resort in the City of Industry, California. Registration
opens at 7:30AM with a continental breakfast. The program begins at
8:30AM.

If you work in the information industry today then you know that some of
your greatest challenges are financial. You know how tough it can be to
explain the true business value of information services to cost-conscious
management. You know how important it is to find the best value for your
research dollar. And you've felt the pressures of shrinking budgets and
rising prices on your departments, reference collections, and businesses.

SCOUG's Spring Program will focus on these issues and more! Speakers from
throughout the information industry will offer a full day of presentations
on all aspects of information pricing and economics. For example...

Hal Varian, economist and Dean of the School of Information Management
and Systems at UC Berkeley, on "The Economics of Libraries in a Digital Age."

A panel featuring CEOs and top executives from Dow Jones Interactive,
Northern Light Research, and Lexis-Nexis will discuss "Why We Price
Things the Way We Do."

Amelia Kassel, President of MarketingBase, on "How to Find the Best
Prices Online."

Eugenie Prime, Director of Libraries at Hewlett-Packard Corporation, on
"Demonstrating Your Value to Corporate Management."

Andrew Odlyzko, AT&T Bell Labs, - on "Reconsidering the Economics of
Scholarly Communication"

Gordon Conable, Director, LSSI West Coast, - on "Can the Private Sector
Do it Better?"

Phil Agree, GSEIS, UCLA Professor & Editor, Red Rock Eater News, - on The
Value of Libraries in a Digital Age"

Anne Marie Gold, Director, Library of California, - on "The economics of
the Library of California"

Gloria Werner, Librarian, UCLA, - on "SPARC: Taking Matters Into Our Own
Hands"

Evan Raeder, Director, CSU, - on "Taking Back Control-Bidding Electronic
Resources at CSU"

Marsha Fulton, AskNet Director, Arthur Andersen Libraries, - on
"Negotiating Flat-Fee Contracts"

Barbara Quint, Editor, Searcher Magazine, - leading wrap-up panel
discussion with full audience participation.

Registration will include program, continental breakfast, lunch, breaks,
exhibits, drawings, exhibitor wine & cheese reception and free parking.

If you are an information worker today, you can't afford to miss this
program!
