REFERENCE LIBRARIAN

THE SCHOOL OF THE ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO
The John M. Flaxman Library of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago
(SAIC) seeks an outgoing and effective individual to serve as Reference
Librarian.  This is a full-time position requiring some evening and weekend
hours.

RESPONSIBILITIES
=2A Provides reference services at the Reference Desk to all eligible =
library
users:  the entire School community (students, faculty, staff)=3B  readers
from affiliated academic libraries=3B  the museum staff=3B  etc.

=2A Guides library visitors in the use of print, on-line, and media
resources.  Actively promotes the use of Flaxman Library collections and
services throughout the institution.

=2A Researches, compiles, and coordinates production of library finding
guides on current and relevant topics.

=2A Assists with bibliographic instruction and library orientations as =
needed.

=2A Assists with material selection and collection development in specific
areas when assigned.

=2A Responsible for supervision and maintenance of picture file and vertical
file collections.

=2A Assists with circulation desk duties and interlibrary loan as needed.

=2A Helps to monitor the condition of computer equipment in the public areas
of the library, reporting problems as they arise.

=2A Reports to the Readers' Services Librarian.

REQUIREMENTS
=2A ALA-accredited MLS with some relevant work experience.

=2A Undergraduate degree in the arts or humanities.  Basic (or better)
mastery of art history.

=2A Strong patron orientation.  Commitment to responsive and innovative =
service.

=2A Demonstrated knowledge of information and communication technologies.

=2A Demonstrated ability to work with patrons at varying levels of
sophistication.

=2A Enthusiasm for the educational mission of the School.

=2A Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a
diverse community of colleagues and library users.  Ability to work
independently and as part of a team.

=2A Excellent communication skills, written and oral.

=2A Familiarity with word processing and other standard office software.

STRONGLY PREFERRED
=2A Professional-level experience as a librarian.

=2A Degree(s) in art.

=2A Experience with ILLINET Online, DRA, OVID, FirstSearch, Prism, UnCover.

=2A Experience with Windows95 and/or WindowsNT.

=2A Some experience in access services (interlibrary loan, circulation,...).

SALARY
Minimum starting salary:  =2428,000 plus benefits.  Salary commensurate with
experience.
