Add to the list of art-related myseries many of the Roderick Alleyn
mysteries by Ngaio Marsh (late 20's to late 70's; some were dramatized
on Mystery!). Alleyn, of the Scotland Yard murder squad, courts and
eventually marries Agatha Troy, a painter (they meet when one of her
models is murdered).

Margery Allingham's Death of A Ghost (a Mr. Campion mystery) is another
art-related mystery (forgery and murder).

Elizabeth Daly's Henry Gammage mysteries (1930's through 1950's) have as
their hero an expert in questioned documents. Many of the cases turn on
forgery; one, the Book of the Lion, is about a forged Chaucer
manuscript.

A number of the Father Brown short stories (by G.K. Chesterton) feature
painters or artists as characters; the stories themselves are very
painterly, wonderful dawns and sunsets.

And isn't the Trent of Trent's Last Case (E.K. Bentley) a painter?

All of these are still in print, or were recently reissued.
