Dear Colleagues: a few of you have received this question directly, but I
would like input from more of you if possible.

What kind of standards does your institution follow regarding copy which
accompanies surrogates for research or publication, and labels for =
exhibition?

With our Visiting Scholars Program, growing numbers of internal researchers,
and a general influx of visitors from the research public, added to requests
via e-mail and snail mail, the CCA is inundated with requests for surrogates
(mainly photos and slides) from books, and Library staff are overwhelmed by
the task of providing accurate accompanying information. Added to this is
label copy for in-house, travelling and loan exhibitions.

We have been obliged to follow rigorous institutional standards, which I am
trying to modify to reduce the labour involved. I am proposing to provide no
more than a highlighted printout of the online record for all surrogates
except those accompanying photos to be published=3B we would provide full
label copy for the latter, and for exhibition purposes.

Is this a problem for anyone else out there? How are you addressing it?
