----------------------------Original message---------------------------- ------------------ Thanks to everyone who responded to my Jan. 25, 1999 question regarding = security issues and library web catalogs. I promised to post the responses to the = list so here they are: 5 institutions responded. The first is considering a cached server outside the firewall with a = separate IP address for the library system so that Museum staff would access it like = email. The second has the library catalog and the web server on 2 different servers inside the firewall. The third has the library system and database inside the firewall but the = web server outside the firewall. The fourth is a Museum with an institutional web server. Traffic from the = OPAC (which sits on the library server) is filtered through the gallery web = server. There is a firewall between the gallery web server and the library server. The fifth loads a tape of their OCLC cataloging onto a commercial internet server. They have a 2 month lag between cataloging and loading. They are planning to move to an in-house system where the library database and access components are on a server separate from the museum's, bu they may still continue to load the tapes onto the external commercial server. None of the respondents have taken any steps to hide the IP address from the public. Again, thanks for all your input. =2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A== 2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2= A Marilyn Czerniejewski Associate Librarian Toledo Museum of Art P.O.
