attached is a copy of our circulation policy.  we're a state institution and
have no choice but to circulate most of our books.
exceptions:
1.  books over $100
2.  catalogues raisonnis
3.  museum collection catalogs
4.  reference books and serials, bound and unbound
5.  other very high use items.
6.  extremely large items regardless of price
7.  videos (most of ours are the pricey artists' videos)

i also try to keep an eye on dealer's catalogs and try to catch items that
have increased in price.  again, if they're over $100, they are stamped
library use only.  if they are over $500, they go to a locked area.  it's not
ideal, but it does keep users from having to shell out megabucks when they
lose something (our minimum lost book fine is $100).
