Dear Jim:

A few years ago I had to find examples of museum object collection policies
and mission statements that dealt with collecting and it wasn't that easy;
there may be more published material available now than there was then.
Although I don't have specific titles in my head right now (I'm writing this
from home), I can refer you to the web sites of two organizations that have
some materials on the subject: AAM (the American Association of Museums
<http://www.aam-us.org/>) and AAMD (the Association of Art Museum Directors
<http://www.AAMD.net/>). The AAM site has a link to its bookstore; it sells
most books currently in print on museology, as well as AAM-published books.
The AAMD site doesn't list many publications, but it includes hyperlinks to
other organizations that may be of some help.

The Smithsonian Institution, which also puts out museum-related publications,
has a web site <http://www.si.edu/organiza/start.htm> that may be of some
help. Besides museum administrators and curators, registrars are the museum
staff members that have the greatest responsibility for collections.
Publications directed at registrars usually include information about
collection policies.

By the way, I located the web sites for all of the above in Lois Swan Jones'
wonderful book, Art Information and the Internet, just published by Oryx
Press. Good luck!
