The joint chapter meeting of ARLIS/Southern California and
ARLIS/Northern California took place at the Getty Center January
14-16 of this year. The meeting kicked off with a reception at
the Getty Research Institute on Thursday evening . The event was
beautifully catered by the Getty Center and the only official
business (besides saying hello to friends) was the introduction
of the SC officers (Coco Halverson, Sue Mayberry, Lois White,
Jean Schimmer) and NC officers (Andrea Segall, Alice Egan, Maia
Jin). The group thanked Lorraine Perrotta for organizing the
joint meeting, and Kathleen Salomon, Acting Director of the Getty
Research Institute welcomed the group to the Getty.

Registration and breakfast at the GRI Lecture Hall followed on
Friday morning. Members took two tours of the Getty given by
Getty staff. The first tour was an in-depth perusal of all 5
floors of the GRI. Three floors of open stacks accommodate
nearly half of the library collections; the balance is located in
compact storage and vaults on the lower floors. The library
catalog is found on IRIS and can be accessed at
http://www.getty.edu/gri. The groups were given special tours of
Special Collections and the Photo Study Collection. The tour of
the library ended with the guide pointing out Andy Goldsworthy's
spectacular sculpture which showcases the summer solstice.
Thanks to the staff of the Reference Department for the tours.

The docent-led Architecture tour was the second offering. It
started with the magnificent 360-degree view of Los Angeles and
information about the 6 Getty buildings on the 110-acre site
(even more stunning to see in person!). Travertine sandstone
embellishes the geometrically shaped modern buildings.
The lush gardens were designed by Robert Irwin. Richard Meyer,
the architect, happened to be on-site, and when spotted and
applauded by one of our groups, he responded with a hearty wave!

Following a box lunch in the GRI lecture hall, 5 speakers focused
on the topic of "Researching California Art". Marcia Reed,
curator of special collections at GRI, spoke on the significance
of artists books. Marian Yoshiki-Kovinick and Phil Kovinick,
curators at the Smithsonian Archives of American Art located at
the Huntington, showed images of and explained research methods
from their latest book, An Encyclopedia of Women Artists of the
American West. Author Gordon McLelland described how he
depends on libraries in the writing of his books (Rick Griffin,
California Watercolors: 1870-1970). Independent scholar Nancy
Moure has written many bibliographies for Southern California
Art, the most recent being California Art: 450 years of painting
and other media.

Coco Halverson, immediate past-chair of ARLIS/SC, convened the
business meeting which followed. She introduced Kathryn Wayne,
ARLIS/NA incoming president, and Lorna Corbetta-Noyes, ARLIS/NA
West Regional Representative. Kathryn and Lorna both spoke
enthusiastically about the upcoming annual conference in
Vancouver and encouraged everyone to attend. Other topics they
spoke about were strategic planning, committee membership, the
Executive Board search for a management firm, and contributing to
the annual conference. Both chapters then moved to donate $250
each to the conference.

Lorraine Perrotta and Susan Flanagan, co-chairs of the 2001
conference in Los Angeles, next spoke to members of the need to
volunteer to help organize the conference. The group discussed a
theme for the convention, hotels, activities, and transportation.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:30 and many of the group went to a
lovely outdoor dinner in Brentwood.

Saturday morning 26 members met at the Huntington Library, Art
Collections and Botanical Gardens. Tours were given of the
Archives of American Art, Art Collections and Art Reference
Library, and the Huntington Main Library.
A great big THANK YOU is due to the organizers of this great
chapter meeting (the above mentioned chapter officers) and to the
staff at the Getty Center, who were all very warm and welcoming.
The joint meeting was an ambitious and inspiring event, and
certainly portends great things to come for the 2001 conference!
