----------------------------Original message---------------------------- THE FRIENDS OF THE UCSB LIBRARY 1999 TRAVEL GRANTS The Friends of the UCSB Library are pleased to offer three travel grants of $500 each, to encourage use of the University Libraries, University of California, Santa Barbara research collections, by scholars who reside beyond commuting distance to the university. The Libraries' strengths include collections relating to the history of the American West, ethnic groups of California, Abraham Lincoln, slavery and abolition, the Civil War, American diplomatic history, book arts, California presses, printing history, 19th and 20th century American and British literature, non-mainstream American religions, trade catalogs, remote-sensing images, foreign topographic map series, digital geospatial data, art exhibition and auction catalogs, microform photoarchives, and performing arts. The grants are intended to help defray expenses for traveling to and residing in Santa Barbara. The length of stay will depend on the applicant's research proposal, but grants normally are intended for visits of up to one week. Grants may be used from June 1999 to May 2000. Faculty, independent scholars, or graduate students working on an advanced degree are eligible to apply. Upon completion of their stay, grant recipients are asked to provide a brief 2-3 page statement of their research findings. These may be published in Soundings, an annual publication of the University Libraries. A committee consisting of faculty, library staff, and Friends members will award the travel grants on the basis of relevance of the proposal to the holdings of the Libraries, the merits and significance of the project, and the qualifications of the applicant. Applications must be received by April 30, 1999. Successful applicants will be notified by May 30, 1999. If you have any questions, please contact David C. Tambo, Head of Special Collections, tel.
