We're posting the revised abstract and speakers' list to ensure that interested attendees have current information in advance of arrival in Vancouver. Judith and David are very well known for their research, publication, and teaching. Cornelia is the designer of several landscape projects within walking distance of the conference hotel (among many others throughout Canada). All promise to be lively and opinionated speakers. Please join us! Sheila and Joan *********************************************************** SESSION 7 Monday, March 29 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. "Green Spaces: Inspiring Landscapes by Women" Moderators: Sheila Klos, University of Oregon Joan Stahl, National Museum of American Art Successful landscape architecture is a result of interaction between clients, designers, the land, and the historical and socio-cultural context of the times. The best projects inspire and reflect a creative vision that transforms the environs, whether that be urban, suburban, or rural. North America has a rich history of outstanding landscape architects and designers, but the contributions of professional women have been less well-researched and documented than the achievements of men. In the interest of equal time, this session will highlight the work of women landscape designers, pioneering spirits that span the 20th century. The exciting and eloquent visuals of designed gardens will accompany a discussion of research and design processes and the documentation available for further research, including published books, manuscripts, letters, plans, and papers. The vanguard will be represented Ellen Biddle Shipman, designer of the Sarah Duke Memorial Garden (among others) and mentor to a generation of garden designers; a survey of 20th-century designers working on the West coast (including Lord & Schryver, Barbara Fealy, Florence Yoch, Katherine Bashford, Ruth Shellhorn, and Lutah Maria Riggs); and Cornelia Hahn Oberlander, Canada's premier landscape architect. SPEAKERS: "Researching Ellen Biddle Shipman" Judith Tankard, Radcliffe Seminars, Cambridge, MA "Researching Women Landscape Architects on the West Coast" David Streatfield, Department of Landscape Architecture, University of Washington, Seattle, WA "Research and Design" Cornelia Hahn Oberlander, Oberlander Associates, Vancouver, BC
