This volume explores the foundations of design as a field of inquiry, the role of research in alternate models of doctoral education, the relationship between doctoral education and professional practice, and other issues that are central to the development of design as an emerging field of investigation. Included are discussions of many existing and planned doctoral programs around the world. The volume (400 pages) presents papers by 25 respected design educators, researchers, and writers. The editors are Richard Buchanan, Dennis Doordan, Lorraine Justice, and Victor Margolin.
