My thanks to all those who replied to my question about the meaning of
the position of horses' legs in equestrian atatues. For an excellent
discussion of this question,dating from 1994, may I refer you to
Stumpers-l (www.cuis.edu/~stumpers/), with replies to a question from
the King County Library System. Search under the words "equestrian
statues". See especially the long, erudite reply from Frank Young, whose
conclusion is that the number of legs off the ground has nothing to with
any symbolism and everything to do with thw skill of the sculptor. He
goes on to discuss at length the history of sculptors' attempts to
overcome the technical difficulties of of equestrian statues    Thanks
