----------------------------Original message---------------------------- WWW.PBS.ORG/RINGS OF PASSION CHOSEN FROM MORE THAN 6200 SITES AS A YAHOO! PICK OF THE DAY OVATION The Arts Network and PBS Premiere Rings of Passion: Five Emotions in World Art Web Site OVATION The Arts Network premiered the Rings of Passion: Five Emotions in World Art interactive web site and virtual art exhibition at www.pbs.org/ringsofpassion, on PBS ONLINE on October 1. The site, an extension of the hour-long television program of the same name that premiered in a special simulcast on OVATION and PBS this past Sunday, October 4, was chosen from more than 6200 new sites as a Yahoo! Pick of the Day for Sunday, October 3. The Rings of Passion: Five Emotions in World Art site explores the power of art to evoke five fundamental human emotions Love, Anguish, Awe, Triumph and Joy across diverse cultures. The site is hosted by J. Carter Brown, director emeritus of the National Gallery of Art, and based on the landmark Rings exhibition which he curated to commemorate the 1996 Cultural Olympiad in Atlanta. The site features eight masterpieces for each of the five emotions featured in the program, a total of 40 artworks shown and discussed in detail, arranged under the emotion they depict. A unique interactive feature of the site allows visitors to arrange the works in their own virtual exhibitions of art, generating a personal juxtaposition of masterpieces by Rodin, Fragonard, Poussin, Cassatt, Picasso, de Kooning and Matisse with national treasures from China, Japan, Tibet, India, Indonesia and Russia; Nigeria, Cameroon and Zaire; Mexico, Cuba and Peru; and Czechoslovakia, England, Italy, the Netherlands and the United States. "The ultimate goal of the site, which it shares with the television program and the exhibition, is to encourage people to trust their emotional reaction to art," said J. Carter Brown. The Rings of Passion site is sponsored in part by Philip Morris Companies Inc. A personal introduction from J. Carter Brown to the Rings theme is included in the site, as well as answers to frequently asked questions and a section where visitors can e-mail Mr. Brown directly with their comments or questions. Visitors can access the site s bulletin board to share commentary, or they can provide a personal critique of Rings and compare that to the wide range of reaction the Rings exhibition evoked from art critics, which is included on the site as well. The site s audio component innovatively combines the works with literary excerpts read by Academy-award. winning actress Meryl Streep. The site can also be accessed through the OVATION Web site at www.ovationtv.com. For information, e-mail [log in to unmask]
