----------------------------Original message---------------------------- -- JACQUELINE VIAUX Jacqueline Viaux was a personal friend of mine. The news of her death saddened me, but did not come as a surprise. She had been ailing this summer and the outlook was not good. Mme Viaux was a protean figure. A true Renaissance woman that all those who met her were not likely to forget. Her culture was truly encyclopedic. Steeped in the Humanities, she also loved modern art. A classicist in musicology, she never missed a jazz concert. Her zest for life and her thirst for knowledge were inexhaustible. An inveterate traveler, she loved the United States. The ARLIS conferences were one of the highlights in her life. She attended all of them. She marveled at the richness of museums in this country. She delighted in the jazz concerts that were orgnized for us in Kansas City. In San Antonio she discovered American history at the Alamo, as well as the marvelous flowers of Texas. Her accomplishments as an author, whose books are on the shelves of many libraries, and as a dynamic force in the world of Art Libraries are well known. Her friends will remember her mostly as someone who combined first rate professionalism, erudition, with the best qualities of a human being.
