----------------------------Original message---------------------------- Greetings, One fulltime cataloging position is available with Library Systems & Services (LSSI) on a continuing contract with the Smithsonian's National Museum of American Art. The SOS! (Save Outdoor Sculpture!) project is being conducted at NMAA's Research and Scholar Center in downtown Washington, DC. We are looking for a qualified, hard working individual who'll follow the very exacting specifications that this very exciting project requires. The SOS! project, begun in 1992, involves the surveying, chronicling, and cataloging of nearly 35,000 pieces of significant outdoor sculpture in the United States. The Statue of Liberty is one piece that the SOS! project has included; Mount Rushmore is another. The catalogers who work on the project take the vast array of information that the field surveyors have gathered -- including a survey form, pictures, articles, writings, etc. -- to assemble an extensive MARC record for inclusion into SIRIS, the Smithsonian's online catalog. Candidates should have an MLS, or be near completion. Cataloging or art backgrounds are preferable, but not necessary. THE NMAA provides a unique, extensive manual for SOS! procedures that must be diligently learned and adhered to, and does not necessary follow LC or AACR2. Good writing and keyboarding skills are essential. Training and "warmup" take about three months. This is a fascinating project, but it is requires the utmost attention to detail. Beginning salary is $29,000. LSSI offers competitive benefits, including sick leave, annual leave, holidays, insurance, education assistance, and a 401(K) plan. No relocation or interview expenses are provided. If you are interested in this position, please e-mail your resume or a summary of your qualifications, with cover letter, to: Mr. Marbury Keyes Director of Human Resources LSSI [log in to unmask] Or, mail it to him at: 20251 Century Boulevard, Suite 100 Germantown, MD 20874 Fax: (301) 540-5522
