Subject: F. Scott Fitzgerald Lecture The Center for the History of the Book at Drew University cordially invites you to a public lecture: JAMES L. W. WEST III Author of "William Styron: A Life" Vice President of SHARP Director of the Penn State Center for the History of the Book will speak on "ANNOTATING MR. FITZGERALD" Monday, October 19 at 5:00 p.m. Learning Center 28, Drew University Madison, New Jersey Prof. West, the General Editor of the Cambridge Edition of the Works of F. Scott Fitzgerald, will discuss the fascinations and challenges of writing historical notes for Fitzgerald's fiction. His novels and stories are peppered with references to popular songs, sports figures, politicians, movie stars, cabarets, and other authors of his era. His readers then knew all of those references: how does the editor explain it all to the reader of today -- not to mention readers who will use this editon in 2050? And when Fitzgerald commits a factual error (as he often did) should the editor emend the text? Admission is free and open to the general public. There will be a reception following the lecture, hosted by the Friends of the Drew University Library. Please mark on your calendar our next lecture: on November 9, E. Jennifer Monaghan will speak on "Reading for the Enslaved, Writing for the Free: Reflections on Liberty and Literacy." This lecture series is funded by a grant from the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation.
