POSITIONS AVAILABLE AT PIERPONT MORGAN LIBRARY

PIERPONT MORGAN LIBRARY, CATALOGING POSITION (FULL-TIME, PERMANENT)

The Pierpont Morgan Library invites applications for the position of
Rare Book Cataloger. The Morgan is an independent research library and
museum that collects, exhibits and fosters research in the areas of rare
books and fine bindings, illuminated manuscripts, master drawings,
ancient Near Eastern seals, and literary, historical, and music
manuscripts. The Library s rare book collection includes important
examples of typography and illustration from all periods, and the most
comprehensive collection of bookbindings in America. In addition to
printed books, the collection also contains broadsides, periodicals,
graphic material, and ephemera. The Morgan is currently in the process
of installing an institution-wide network and acquiring an integrated
library system.

The Library seeks an experienced cataloger to catalog material owned
by the Department of Early Printed Books. Duties include the cataloging
of collection items, authority work as needed (including the creation of
NACO and in-house authority records), revision of the records of other
rare book catalogers, and participation in database maintenance projects
and in planning for the implementation of an integrated library system.

Job requirements:  M.L.S. from ALA-accredited institution and at least
two years experience cataloging rare books; facility with European
languages; working knowledge of USMARC formats and AACR2, DCRB, LCSH,
and relevant special collections thesauri; experience working with a
bibliographic utility such as RLIN or OCLC; knowledge of rare books and
descriptive bibliography.


PIERPONT MORGAN LIBRARY, CATALOGING POSITION (TEMPORARY)

Title: Cataloger, Retrospective Conversion Project

Two-year, full-time, temporary position

The Morgan Library is in the process of implementing a library-wide
network and an integrated library system which will contain information
on all its collections, including rare books, manuscripts, drawings and
prints, ancient Near Eastern seals, and the Library s reference
materials. To prepare for the new system, the Library has undertaken
several data conversion projects using a combination of outside vendors
and in-house staff.

The Library seeks an experienced cataloger to work for a term of two
years on a project to create or derive records for selected portions of
its printed book collection. Included in the project will be the
Library s 2,500 incunables and an additional 4,000 titles judged to be
of special difficulty or complexity, such as sacred and liturgical
works, analytics, and graphic materials.  Much of the collection is
non-English language (predominantly Latin, French, Italian, and German);
the candidate must also be able to deal with orthographic vagaries and
with Latin/vernacular variations in name forms and uniform titles.

Most of the records will be created from existing catalog entries,
although it may occasionally be necessary to work with book in hand.
Working with existing documentation, the cataloger will search RLIN for
the best possible match, derive or create a record, and transcribe
holdings and copy-specific information (e.g. accession number,
provenance, descriptions of binding, standard bibliographic citations,
etc.)  The project will also involve some database cleanup and authority
work.

QUALIFICATIONS:

M.L.S.; at least two years cataloging experience using a bibliographic
utility (RLIN preferred); familiarity with European languages; knowledge
of AACR2 and USMARC format for bibliographic and authority records;
experience with early printed books helpful; must work with accuracy and
attention to detail; and have the ability to manage time efficiently.

PIERPONT MORGAN LIBRARY, CATALOGING ASSISTANT (TEMPORARY)


Title: Cataloging Assistant, Retrospective Conversion Project

One year, full-time temporary position

The Morgan Library is in the process of implementing a library-wide
network and an integrated library system which will contain information
on all its collections, including rare books, manuscripts, drawings and
prints, ancient Near Eastern seals, and the Library s reference
materials. To prepare for the new system, the Library has undertaken
several data conversion projects using a combination of outside vendors
and in-house staff.

The Library seeks a person with a knowledge of English literature and
some library experience to work on a project to create or derive MARC
records in RLIN for English, American, and French 19th and 20th century
books. Working with book in hand, the Cataloging Assistant will search
RLIN for the best possible match, derive or create a record, and add
holdings data.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience working with an automated library system or bibliographic
utility (RLIN preferred); some knowledge of USMARC format; experience
handling rare books a plus; must be able to work with speed and
accuracy, and manage time efficiently.
