I believe the French term for this in literary contexts is "l'abime"
(n.m.)but I am not sure that this term is used in art historical discussion.

Does anyone know the term (if there is one) for the idea of a picture within
a
picture within a picture, ad infinitum.  I have had a few people looking for
me
without success.  Is it a French term?  We thought of perhaps looking in
books
featuring the works of particular artists like Velasquez or Vermeer or
Magritte, etc., but so far not much luck.
