The Research Libraries Group (RLG) is pleased to announce that the
Index to Nineteenth-Century American Art Periodicals is now
available. Compiled under the direction of ARLIS/NA member Mary M.
Schmidt, the Index to Nineteenth-Century American Art Periodicals is
the only online index to art periodicals that were published in the
United States during the 19th century. The index now joins other
RLG Citadel files - Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals,
Bibliography of the History of Art, and SCIPIO: Art and Rare Book
Sales Catalogs - in providing online information to scholars in art
and art history.

The index was conceived in 1976 from a grant proposal written by
Ms. Schmidt, who was then Fine Arts Librarian at Columbia
University, and Pamela J. Parry, Assistant Fine Arts Librarian.
Before the compilation of this file, the only guide to American
periodical art literature of this period was a printed bibliography
contained in Helene Roberts masters' thesis (Univ. of Washington,
1961). Scholars hoping to find information pertinent to their
research on 19th century art had to perform an arduous manual search
through these references. When Ms. Schmidt moved to Princeton's
Marquand Library in 1977 the two institutions shared responsibility
for development of the file. In 1989 Mary Schmidt retired from her
position as librarian to devote her time to completion of the index.

The 42 journals indexed in the file of almost 27,000 records
represent a nearly complete coverage of journals between 1840 and
1907. Since entire journal contents are indexed -- articles, art
notes, illustrations, stories, poems, and advertisements -- the
index is a valuable source of information on popular culture and
industry, as well as artists and illustrators, painting, sculpture,
drawing, photography, architecture and design, exhibitions and
sales, decoration, and collecting. Record access is enhanced by the
addition of broad Library of Congress subject headings, RILA
(International Repertory of the Literature of Art) terms, and other
subject key words. Names for people and organizations are augmented
by the inclusion of variant forms taken from the American Art
Annual, Who's Who in American Art, and other sources. Abstracts are
included in many records.

The index can be searched using author, title, journal title,
subject, and abstract indexes. Search access to RLG's CitaDel files
is available through Eureka or through Zephyr using a Z39.50 client.

A complete list of journals indexed in the AAI file and a Fact Sheet
for the file that includes a sample record is available at RLG's
World Wide Web site at www.rlg.org.
