This year markes the 175th anniversary of the founding of the Brooklyn
Museum of Art as a library. To celebrate this anniversary a series of
lectures has been ogranized to hightlight the depth and richness of the
Museum's Library and Archival collections.

The first lecture in the fall series will feature the work of Elizabeth
Hawes (1903-1971), fashion designer, author and journalist. The Library
has extensive documentation on Hawes including sketches, scrapbooks and
books illustrating her designs and philosophy. Working from 1928 through
the 1940's, Hawes was a designer of inventive clothing and a fashion
writer who argued for comfortable clothes that reflected the personality
of the wearer. Guest lecturer Mary Donohue, an art historian, is writing a
dissertation on Hawes and her viewpoints on the fashion world.

When and Where:
Saturday, September 26th at 1pm in the Art Reference
Library, 2nd floor.
