The Digital Reformatting Specialist will be responsible for assisting Library
staff in developing digital project ideas and proposals; contributing to the
development of project specifications and guidelines; performing scanning and
post-processing activities;  participating in preparing and monitoring outside
contract arrangements; and providing written documentation for
collection-based
digital conversion activities in support of the University of Chicago Digital
Library.

Under the direction of the Preservation Projects Librarian, the Digital
Reformatting Specialist will work with Preservation Department Managers,
Systems staff, and other Library staff to help plan digital project ideas and
prepare project proposals involving the conversion of a wide range of library
collections.  These will include the digital conversion of bound and unbound
volumes, rare and fragile printed materials, manuscripts, photographs and
other
illustrated materials, sound recordings, video tapes and other non-print
media.  The Digital Reformatting Specialist also will be responsible for the
following activities:  scanning library collections, converting digital audio
files, managing files, creating derivatives for Web access, quality
inspection,
and saving files to archival storage.  Trains and supervises preservation and
other library staff in the day-to-day performance of these activities in a
production environment.  Within established project guidelines and standards,
determines scanning approach, conversion and presentation requirements,
material handling routines for library materials.  Sets-up procedures and an
efficient workflow to optimize production for the preparation of materials,
image capture, digital conversion, and post-processing to meet institutional
priorities and goals.  Prepares detailed reports and project documentation of
technical and procedural aspects of the project including a description of
project methods, workflow, equipment configuration, and software used.
Assists
with the preparation of outside vendor RFP s, development of product
specifications, and the monitoring and evaluation of vendor bids, products,
and
services.

All qualifying candidates are required to possess the following documentation
and abilities:   B.A.; Previous experience with digital imaging technology,
including scanning equipment, software, and techniques.  Ability to
communicate
and interact effectively with library staff in all units.  Ability to
establish
priorities and exercise sound judgment.  Excellent organizational, problem
solving, and workflow management skills.  Sensitivity to handling issues of a
wide variety of library materials.  Prefer previous library experience with
knowledge of library operations and bibliographic control procedures.
Familiarity with Windows 95/Windows NT, Adobe Photoshop, and other digital
conversion software.  Knowledge of digital file formats and compression
schemes.
