----------------------------Original message---------------------------- ARLIS Colleagues, Is anyone familiar with the term "Borghese style" especially in reference to lamps? A patron says that it refers to a particular type of silver plated or gilded lamp. However, I have a sneaking suspicion that the term may refer to the decoration of the lamps rather than to the metallic finish. In any case, the only reference to "Borghese style" has been two ArtFact auction entries, and neither refers to lamps. One of the objects is a vase and the other is a clock mounted in a vase both dating to late 19th century. They are called "Borghese Style" because the decoration imitates the famous Borghese krater in the Louvre. Searches in Art Abstracts, OCLC, the Web, Dictionary of Art, various decorative art dictionaries, etc. have been fruitless. So I've hit a wall with the resources available to me. If anyone has any suggestions concerning both the term and its use, especially concerning lamps, I would be most grateful.
