Pierpont Morgan Library
Reference Collection Cataloger

Position is open due to staff member s relocation.

This message is being cross-posted: please excuse any duplication, and
forward to your colleagues.

The Pierpont Morgan Library seeks an experienced candidate with a strong
cataloging background to fill a full-time position, open September 8,
1998.

The Library
The Pierpont Morgan Library collections originated with the medieval and
Renaissance manuscripts, rare books and fine bindings, literary and
historical manuscripts, and master drawings and prints acquired by
Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913). In 1924, believing that the collections
had become too significant to remain in private hands, J.P. Morgan, Jr.
transformed the library into a public institution. The collections have
expanded over the years, but remain focused on manuscripts, books, and
master drawings.

The Reference Collection is comprised of ca. 60,000 titles, including
monographs, periodicals, pamphlets, photographs, microforms, and
CD-ROMs, which are intended to support research on the Library s rare
collections. The Library anticipates the installation of an integrated
online library system within the next 18 months.

Responsibilities
The position involves cataloging current and retrospective material in a
variety of formats and languages into RLIN, using AACR2, LCSH and other
standard vocabularies, local subject headings, and a local
classification system. Authority records are contributed to the Library
of Congress Name Authority File through the ArtNACO project, and are
also maintained in a local file. Other duties include providing
assistance to Library staff using the the Reference Collection, and
overseeing the cataloging activities of paraprofessional staff in the
department.

Qualifications
Required: an MLS, and three years professional experience as a cataloger
on RLIN or OCLC. Reading knowledge of two Western European languages,
and a strong humanities background.
Preferred: some supervisory experience; experience evaluating and
implementing an online system.

Salary and Benefits
Salary is competitive, and commensurate with experience. Generous
benefits include medical and dental insurance and 23 days of annual
leave.
