The Witt Library

The Witt Library is the world's foremost collection of reproductions of
Western Art. It covers almost 70,000 artists from the 12th century to the
present day, from Scandinavia to Australia and from France to the United
States. The Library currently contains (1998) nearly 2 million pictures,
arranged by artist alphabetically within national schools.

The library's pictures originate from sale and exhibition catalogues,
journal and newspaper cuttings, books, private and public photographic
collections; the Library actively maintains the currency of its collection
in many other ways including carrying out its own photographic surveys.

As well as being a uniquely comprehensive visual resource for picture
researchers, the textual data is of almost greater importance. The Art
Historian can discover a picture's provenance, size, medium and current
location, as well as attribution notes, artist biographies and other
secondary material.

The Witt Library was started by Sir Robert Witt in the 1890s and is
currently maintained by the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of
London.

For the benefit of researchers world-wide, this valuable collection was
microfiched in 1981 producing approximately 15,000 B/W microfiche.

The Witt Library 10 Year Update, covering material collected after 1981, was
published in 1992 producing 5,719 B/W microfiche.

The Conway Library, also part of the Courtauld Institute of Art and
reproduced on microfiche, covers architecture - from early medieval to
present day, sculpture - 15th Century to present day and illuminated
manuscripts.
