----------------------------Original message---------------------------- Dear ARLIS friends, Thanks to all who contributed information when I submitted questions for small or branch art and architecture libraries. I tallied responses from 15 libraries. I will be glad to share further information if anyone wishes to write me. The general and summarized results are below: Question # 1 What are the policies concerning the circulation of current journal issues? Special permission for scanning seemed to be the norm, with anywhere from 2-8 hours allowed as the charge period. 2 libraries did not allow current issues to circulate. Question # 2 What are the policies concerning the circulation of bound journals? Some bound journals went out with special permission only, some for 1 day or ove others went out for 3 days to grads and faculty only, some shared the current is policies, and some were not allowed to circulate. Question # 3 How are temporary or non-book items managed? The general response was to barcode or tag everything so it could be processed and circulated electronically. Some libraries still use a manual check out based on special permission for AV equipment. Question # 4 What employee schedules are used for nights and weekends? How are student employees deployed? Excerpts from some of the responses: staff 2 staff +lab tech staff-8 to 5 staff til 4:30 4 staff weekdays ? ( weekdays?) staff 1 evening a week flex schedule 2 staff staff weekdays til 5 staff weekdays til 5 what staff? staff til 5-ish students rotate nights and weekends nights and weekends days, nights and weekends 11 part time students nights and weekends nights and weekends nights and weekends nights and weekends nights and weekends days, nights and weekends Question #5 How are small libraries managing image databases, Web sites and other technological innovations? Most who responded are managing their web sites themselves, or relying on the parent institution's computer staff. Taking the needed time for web site maintenance was often mentioned as a difficulty. Several mentioned that they were using some type of electronic reserves system, or were planning to implement one. 3 libraries had image database managers / slide managers who worked on projects. 2 mentioned a need for or a search for a database manager.
