Title: Fine Arts Librarian Rank: Librarian II Reporting Relationship: Director of Hamon Library Date Available: August 1, 1998 Salary: $30,000 minimum Position Description and Duties: The Fine Arts Librarian is the primary resource for users in the identification, location, use, and interpretation of the Hamon's collections in the fine arts/humanities. Provides basic reference service in the other arts as required. Supervises the staffing of the Hamon's ERC (Electronic Resource Center) and Information Desk. Provides user education in art and art history for graduate and undergraduate programs. Prepares paper and electronic guides in the use of the Library and its fine arts holdings. Responsible for the collection development of art and art history materials. Works closely with faculty and students in all of the arts. Assists in the processing and interpretation of the Hamon's special collection materials. Detailed duties and responsibilities of this position are as follows: 1. Collection Development: Responsible for the selection of materials for the disciplines of art and art history in the Hamon Arts Library. Reads reviews and other relevant materials in making recommendations for purchases for the reference and circulating collections. Works closely with faculty from the disciplines in making selections. Works with the Center for Information Processing (CIP) in placing orders in assigned disciplines and monitoring related funds. 2. Reference Assistance: Assists users in the identification, location, utilization and interpretation of print and electronic resources, including online catalog (NOTIS), CD-ROM, networks and online databases; interprets library policies to users. Assists in the management of all new technology in information services, maintains skills through reading, practice, and continuing education. Coordinates reference staffing. 3. User Education: Schedules, plans, and teaches classes in print and electronic information resources, including the Internet, for art and art history classes; develops instructional materials; publicizes the service; establishes and maintains contacts with teaching faculty. 4. Bibliographic Control: Works in collaboration with the Center for Information Processing (CIP) regarding representation of materials in the online catalog. Develops and maintains understanding of basic cataloging standards and database record structure (e.g. MARC formats). 5. Other: May supervise work of library assistant or student library assistants. Serves on library committees, task forces, etc. as appropriate. In addition to core management and service responsibilities, all Central University Library staff participate in work teams which cross service boundaries. All staff must be prepared to adapt to flexible organizational patterns and changing work environments. Position duties and responsibilities will change as the libraries respond to new priorities and users' research needs. The libraries will adopt new directions and information technology as appropriate, update policies and procedures as necessary, and periodically reevaluate collections, access, services, operations, and programs. Background: The Jake and Nancy Hamon Arts Library, a 46,000 square foot, four floor facility houses the majority of SMU's collections in art, arts administration, cinema, dance, music, and theater, including 90,000 cataloged books and scores, 26,000 audio and video recordings, and 262 current periodical subscriptions. It contains an audio-visual center, computer lab, exhibition spaces, a meeting room, group and individual studies, and a secure, climate controlled Special Collections area. The Hamon maintains a wide variety of computer technology including 70 public and staff microcomputers, three computer networks, CD-ROM and other optical disc technology, and access to OCLC, RLIN, and other bibliographic and information utilities. This is one of four librarian and five support staff positions, and reports to the Director of the Hamon Arts Library. SMU has the largest library system of any private institution in the Southwest, and the Hamon is part of its Central University Libraries. Qualifications: Required: Master of Library Science from an ALA accredited institution; Masters's degree in art or art history; familiarity with microcomputer-based technology in libraries; good verbal and written communication skills; ability to work effectively with faculty and students. Desired: Knowledge of one or more of the following languages: French, German, or Italian; one or more years of experience in an academic fine arts library or archive. Librarians are expected to build a progressively more substantive professional/scholarly record.
