Rayanne, et al.,

You might be interested in the fact that the Bibliography of Asian Studies
(1971--) is offering free searching of their web index this month. Check
out: http://dev.hti.umich.edu/b/bas/
You will be able to browse by country (you'll find India under South Asia
and they also index Southeast Asian materials), subdivided by subject (such
as painting, architecture, etc.). Both monographs and articles are
indexed. This is the web version of the publication put out by the
Association of Asian Studies:

Because the AAS was always slow at getting its index published, the
American Committee for South Asian Art (now called the American Council for
Southern Asian Art) started publishing the _ACSAA Bibliography of South
Asian Art_. I don't know if we'll continue to do so now that the AAS has
gone online. I don't have my latest _ACSAA Newsletter_ here at work (I
keep forgetting to bring it in), so call me at home in the evenings if you
want the latest address to order back issues of their bibliography.
According to my Spring 1995 newsletter, the 1975-76 bibliography (compiled
by Helen Kelly) and the 1977-80 bibliography (compiled by Geri Malandra)
are available for $4.00 each. The 1981-83 bibliography (compiled by Monica
Lawyer) is avail. for $7.00 to ACSAA members and $9.00 to non-members. The
1986-88 bibliography (which I compiled) is $12.00 for members and $15.00
for non-members. The 1989-91 bibliography (compiled by Woodman Taylor) is
available for $30.00. I gather that the 1974 and1984-85 bibliographies are
o.p. I think that there was supposed to be another bibliography published
after the 1989-91, but I don't recall seeing an announcement.

My husband still uses the following Roy Craven book as a text for his
classes. It's more concise and comprehensive than Susan Huntington's book
which omits Mughal India, painting, etc. (but Susan Huntington's book has a
great bibliography for ancient India).

for required texts.)

Vidya Dehejia just came out with a new book title: _Indian Art_ (Phaidon,
1997). Our copy is not yet catalogued so I can't comment yet on the
bibliography or the comprehensiveness.

James Harle"s book has a good bibliography:

AUTHOR: Harle, J. C. (James C.)

                  Harle.

The _Art Book Biannual_ put out by Worldwide Books is what I always use to
track down exhibition catalogs. They index non-western art (India is
included in Far Eastern Art) and provide abstracts to the catalogs. The
Univ. of Washington Press also distributes exhibitions catalogs.

What about using Arntzen & Rainwater as a guide to standard titles? Or the
bibliographies in several sections of the Dictionary of art? Or, if you
only want what's in print, how about a subject search in BIP?

Are you trying to track down reliable Indian and Southeast Asian publishers
or any publishers of Indian art books? In my opinion, university presses
are still the best publishers for books on India. Some of our U.S.
scholars who've not been able to get published in the U.S. have published
with Oxford India. Mapin Pubs. (often listed in U. of Washington Press
catalogs) does a good job with it's illustrations; less scholarly texts
though.

Book publishers in India often reprint standard texts, sometimes with
variant titles, not always on good paper or with clear illustrations. I
recommend talking with a vendor you trust to discuss quality before
purchase. My favorite vendor for books from India is South Asia Books
(314) 474-0116. Gery Barrier, managing proprietor can probably advise you
of quality before you place an order with him.
Looking for out of print book titles? John Randall in London
(0171-630-5331; fax:0171-821-6544) usually has good stock.

Let me know if you want recommendations for specific aspects of Indian art
(medium, period, etc.).

Best wishes,

Janine Henri
