----------------------------Original message---------------------------- ------------------ Distributed for ARLIS/NA THE DICTIONARY OF ART SILENT AUCTION TO BENEFIT ARLIS/NA SCHOLARSHIP FUND The Dictionary of Art of Grove=92s Dictionaries Inc. has donated a set of The Dictionary of Art to the ARLIS/NA 25th Anniversary Scholarship Fund drive. The widely publicized, highly acclaimed 34-volume work will be sold at a silent auction to be held during the 26th Annual ARLIS/NA Conference in Philadelphia, March 5-11, 1998. The auction is a unique opportunity to acquire this essential reference source, valued at =248,800, while contributing to the work of the society. The minimum ARLIS/NA silent auction bid for The Dictionary of Art is =243,500. Bidding is not restricted to ARLIS/NA members or to individuals=97libraries and businesses within and outside the society are encouraged to participate. Bids will be accepted by mail prior to the conference and also in Philadelphia. The highest bidder will be announced at the conference but need not be present. The Dictionary of Art will ship the set directly to the winning bidder. Pre-conference bids must be received at ARLIS/NA headquarters by February 15, 1998 and should be sent to Penney De Pas, Executive Director, ARLIS/NA, 4101 Lake Boone Trail, Suite 201, Raleigh, NC 27607-7507. After February 15, bids will be accepted at the conference until 8:30 A.M., Tuesday, March 10. All bids should include the bidder=92s name, address, telephone number, signature, and the amount of the bid. Bids should be sealed in an envelope marked =22Silent Auction.=22 Payment must be received at ARLIS/NA headquarters by April 13, 1998. If the winner is unable to fulfill the obligation, The Dictionary of Art will be offered to the next-highest bidder. Bidders are advised that the set of The Dictionary of Art donated for this silent auction may not be sold or traded for profit and that only payment exceeding the =248,800 fair market value of the publication may be claimed as a tax-deductible charitable gift. The Dictionary of Art silent auction marks the end of the first year of a continuing fundraising effort to commemorate ARLIS/NA=92s 25th anniversary. Proceeds from the auction will be added to the ARLIS/NA 25th Anniversary Scholarship Fund, an endowment established to promote education in art librarianship and visual resources curatorship. The Dictionary of Art joins over 230 other contributors to the fund=97individual and business affiliate members of ARLIS/NA, local chapters, and institutions. The first awards, in the form of paid internships in art libraries and visual resources collections, will be offered for the 1998-99 school year through a program administered by the ARLIS/NA Professional Development Committee.
