1998 ANNUAL CONFERENCE FOCUS: PRESERVATION

Do you have responsibility for preservation of library collections or visual
resources? Every institution faces issues involved with providing safe
environments for its research materials -- some of which may be in
unusual formats. The 1998 annual conference, being held March 5-11 at
the Doubletree Hotel in Philadelphia, will feature two programs that will be
of great interest to you:

-- "Diamonds or Dinosaurs? New Technologies in Landmark Libraries" is
a panel session that will address aspects of incorporating the
accoutrements of high technology into facilities of historical significance.
Discussion will include factors that affect the physical safety of the
collections during the renovation process.

-- "Keeping it Safe: Preservation of Library Materials" is a workshop
designed to provide hands-on training from an expert in the field. Hedi
Kyle is Head Conservator at the American Philosophical Society, author of
"Library Materials Preservation Manual: Practical Methods for Preserving
Books, Pamphlets, and Other Printed Material" and an instructor in the
Book Art and Printmaking graduate programs at the University of the Arts,
where the workshop will take place. Attendees will learn methods of
preservation that are practical and effective, and easily applied to
collections that include printed materials and photographs. Participants
will be able to bring examples from their collections for for disussion and
recommendation for treatment. (The workshop is limited to 15 participants
and space is going fast, so early registration is strongly encouraged.)

Please note that the pre-conference registration deadline is Tuesday,
February 10, 1998. Register now to receive the discounted basic
full-conference rate.
