NOTICE: The College Art Association, in conjunction with the National Initiative for a Networked Cultural Heritage (NINCH) and the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), with funding from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, will present its final "Town Meeting" on the Fair Use of Digital Images on Thursday, February 26, 1998 during its 86th annual conference, at the Royal York Hotel, 100 Front Street, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The program will include the following speakers: SESSION I: ==>David Green (National Initiative for a Networked Cultural Heritage) will speak on current efforts to define copyright law for digital transmission and use. ==>Gary Schwartz (Curators of Dutch Art) will speak on strategies scholars may consider using to help obtain more wide-ranging privileges for their use of images. ==>Peter Walsh (Davis Museum and Cultural Center, Wellesley College) is going to investigate the significance of the "copy" in today's technological age, and will show how copyright law fails to acknowledge what "copy" means in the visual arts. SESSION II: The second half of this two-part meeting will be devoted to a debate between Max Anderson (Art Museum Image Consortium [AMICO] and American Association of Museum Directors [AAMD]) and Howard Besser (University of California, Berkeley) on intellectual property issues pertaining to AMICO and similar site-licensing schemes that are poised to make museum images available to academia.
